Sara Zaske Guest Post

As part of 'The First'  Blog Tour ~ Sara Zaske has very kindly agreed to do a Guest Post too.

Welcome to Sara!

The Off-Center Heroine

I know it must be awfully hard to be the chosen one: what to do with all that power? And then the jealousy! Everyone wants to either be you or beat you. Those bad guys just always zoom right in on the chosen one, don't they?

Every reader of YA fantasy fiction knows this dilemma very well. Dare I saythe chosen one story is a little tired. That's one of the reasons I chose to make Cassie, the main character of The First, a normal girl. But just because she has no magical power doesn't mean she's boring. In fact, like many characters usually relegated to the wise-cracking sidekick role, Cassie is more interesting than Violet, the chosen-one type in this story.

For one thing, Cassie has got a heck of a lot more to say. As an outcast member of the magical First People,Violet is a stranger in a strange land. She can't relate to humans very well (or other First People for that matter), so she doesn't talk much.

Cassie, on the other hand, can't shut up. She has an opinion about everything, which makes her the perfect narrator if sometimes an unreliable one. It's also one of her biggest problems. She tells so many stories and out right lies that when she does tell the truthlike her Trojan namesake Cassandrano one believes her.

Putting the sidekick in the center of The First also allowed me focus more on the friendship between Cassie and Violet. So many fantasy books have guy "buddy" stories (think Frodo and Sam or Harry Potter and Ron Weasley). I thought it would be interesting and fun to write a girls "buddy" story. After all, we have good friends too.

And just because a character has some super duper magical ability doesn't mean she has all the answers. In The First, Violet sure doesn't. She needs a lot of help from the non-powerful. In fact, if it weren't for Cassie, things might just go terribly, awfully wrong....

To find out how she does it, enter to win a copy of The First. Also available for a very reasonable price on Amazon and Smashwords!

Author Bio:

Sara Zaske has lived a variety of places including eight years in Oakland, California where The First is set.

In Sara's own words:  I’ve been a bookseller, advertising hack, English teacher, newspaper reporter, communications director, and an editor. Do you sense a theme?

I used to have vague notions of writing the great American novel. Then, I realised that I loved writing about… reluctant dragons, girls who sprouted roots from their feet, and punks who were really water gods. Yes, that’s right, young adult fantasy novels. Love the stuff.

And my first book, aptly titled The First, is currently available on Smashwords and Amazon.

Whilst reading this Eco-thriller, I've enjoyed the plot, the characters and the pace.  Usually I don't say anything about the books I show, because I like to leave it up to you, the reader, to form your own opinion, but that said, I did enjoy this novel very much! Nuff said and Cut, we're outta here!
Stay cool and keep reading!

Until next time thanks for stopping by

Hi everyone!

I hope you've all had a great week and are looking forward to a beautiful weekend.

This week there's no Showcase, but next week Sara Zaske's Blog Tour is here, so make a reminder to come and visit on Friday the 27th July!

Don't miss out on THE FIRST!

As for me today, I'm writing.   I need to finalise my novel 'Scarlett Phoenix' and as all you writers out there know, the final edits always seem to drag on... and on... and on... but it'll be worth it.  So it's head down, focus engaged and just get on with it already!!! LOL

Enjoy your weekend and it's good news weather wise for us today, which makes a change after weeks and weeks of rain, so it's a happy sunny day!

So what do you think to my revamp and new look?

Yesterday I took it upon myself to revamp my blog, after seeing several other blogs just recently that were looking a bit too similar to mine and you know that uniqueness is a priority, well it is as far as I'm concerned. (LOL)

So welcome to the updated model!

I hope you like it.

Ties to the Blood Moon

Robin P. Waldrop

Synopsis

Genevieve is a teenage girl who moves in with her aunt in Alaska after the death of her mother. Soon after her arrival she learns the things she was raised to believe only existed in fairytales are in fact a big part of her history. When it gets to be too much she seeks refuge in the arms of her new boyfriend, William, only to find out he's not who she thought he was either.

Meet the Author

Robin P. Waldrop hails from Miami, but lives in Alabama with best friend, business partner, and husband John. She is a mother of five, grandmother of five, and owner of a variety of different animals. She is an award winning author who enjoys writing edgy YA paranormal/Urban Fantasy, and FBI suspense/thriller novels and short stories.

Review

I knew going into Ties to the Blood Moon that it was a YA novel. So I was prepared for the teen angst and the instant love everyone always criticizes. If you remember being seventeen though, you could fall in love in a class period. That being said I thought I had the book figured out, and I knew what was going to happen. I was totally wrong. By the time I had gotten into the meat of the story I didn't know what to expect next or who to trust.
I enjoyed the twists that the author put into the story. There was a lot of action and some suspenseful times. Some may think that there were some hasty life decisions made on the part of the protagonist, but you have to take into account that she is seventeen, and hot headed. The main character is not a think before you act type person and that shows in the choices she makes, but she means well and the lore of the creatures in the story and the twists keep you captivated enough that you want to know what will happen next.
I think the YA genre is perfect for you Robin and you captured the story of a seventeen year old thrust into a strange new world beautifully.

5 Questions with Raven Bower

5 Questions with Raven Bower

Author of the Apparitions Series

Today I'm joined by Raven Bower, who has so very kindly agreed to part-take in my '5 Questions' and tell us a little about her upcoming release.

What Inspired the Apparitions Series?

The heroine, Bailey Khane did. She walked on stage, complete with her name and past bio, ready to go. I found her struggle with accepting her gift to see the dead intriguing and sad, particularly in light of the abundance of modern ‘skeptics’.

It took a while, however, until I had a story that went with her. That happened after seeing a particularly brutal murder in the news and wondering that age old question that constantly nags writers – What If…?

How did you develop the ghosts in the Apparitions Series?

It was a mix of my real world experiences with the beyond and extensive research into the experiences of others. From there, I created their rules within the Apparitions world ~ which, are quite akin to how they function in our world with a few tweaks.

Rags Beneath is the third in the series, will there be more?

Yes and no. Rags Beneath gives a very fine wrap up to most of the characters within the trilogy and I don’t want to drag that out unnecessarily. So yes, this is the end for the Apparitions series.

However, <insert evil grin here> it’s not the end for several of the series’ most popular characters. I have another supernatural suspense/paranormal series brewing and these certain characters will be waltzing on screen again within that world.

How comparable is your Vengeance series, launched with Primal this past May, to the Apparitions series?

They’re akin in spirit and yet completely different. The Apparitions series is ‘clean’ as in its heat level is low to non-existent, whereas the Vengeance series is considerably hot. I was recently called ‘naughty’ in a recent review of Primal and that made my day.

The bad guys in the Apparitions series live on the page; yet, I’ve turned the camera away from many of their dirty deeds. This isn’t true of the Vengeance series – there the reader gets a full frontal of what the antagonists are truly like. It’s not for the faint of heart nor the easily offended.

What’s next for you and your husband/co-author Lain?

Tons!

Our epic fantasy series, Weeping Dark, launches late this year/early 2013 with the first novel – Bleeding Edge.

We’re currently working on a romantic adventure fantasy with lots of swashbuckling action! Then it’s on to Smoke, book two of the Vengeance series – which is slated for an April 2013 release.

Plus, I’m working on a secret project with one of my publishers and a talented fellow author. I can’t disclose it at this moment but there will be announcements within the next few weeks or so. All I can say is that it’s exciting!

Add to that book two of the Weeping Dark series and our brewing paranormal spin-off series from Apparitions and we’re rolling in projects! Not to mention the ones waiting in the wings <eyes them suspiciously> that are getting antsy and want their moment on stage! Stories. Characters. Impatient buggers I say.
